Reading Intervention Program: Helping Kids With Reading Difficulties

Studies that focus on children who struggle with reading identified something interesting. Not only are they poor readers, but they also fall below other students in phonological awareness skills. Based on that finding, experts began to assess the benefits of a reading intervention program.

Examining the efficacy of reading intervention programs for elementary-age kids led to mixed results. Experts initially studied phonological awareness training of poor readers. The program primarily focused on the analysis, blending, and decoding of texts for children between the ages of 7 and 12.

The outcome for this group was then compared to another set of children. The comparison group consisted of students of the same age and with a level of poor reading skills. Experts found that the students who received training scored much higher. In particular, they did better in three areas. These included reading nonsense words, standard three-letter words, and phonemic awareness.

Advantages of an Online Reading Intervention Program

Students in grades two to five who tested in the lower 10 percent specific to word recognition received training. This involved a computer-based program. For this, experts used two groups of participants.

  • Group OneReceived phonological training. The kids then read stories via a computer.
  • Group TwoReceived training on comprehensive stories. This began with small-group instructions. Then the kids read stories via a computer.

When completed, experts discovered that group two spent 50 percent more time reading stories than group one.

Earlier research also uncovered that control groups without training showed zero reading improvement. However, the trained groups one and two made great strides toward recognizing words over time. This showed that a reading intervention program worked.

Overall, the findings from multiple studies suggest that reading intervention programs for elementary-aged students helped. Specifically, experts saw improved decoding skills. Even when asked to decode within a limited timeframe, these kids did remarkably well.

Another study made short-and long-term comparisons. This was for children who completed reading intervention programs for elementary classes as opposed to those who did not. The program included reading instructions alone and phonological awareness. In this case, the results surprised everyone. Experts saw immediate results. The students who completed the reading intervention program ranked six months ahead of those without training.
