Stainless-Steel Banding – Different Types for Different Uses

Stainless steel banding is a versatile material, serving various purposes depending on the width and thickness of the banding and the type of stainless steel. Each type has its own unique attributes that influence its uses. The three types of stainless steel used in stainless steel banding are: type 201; type 316; type 304.

Type 201 Stainless Steel Banding

Type 201 stainless steel has reduced nickel content and added manganese. Stainless-steel banding made from Type 201 stainless steel is strong and suitable for most general banding purposes. Common uses for type 201 stainless steel banding include fastening fixtures such as signs, traffic signals, banner arms, and control boxes to posts, poles or beams. Type 201 stainless steel banding is also be used for securing fittings to larger diameter hoses.

Heavy Duty Type 201 Stainless Steel Banding

Made with the same Type 201 stainless steel banding material as the type above, but the Heavy Duty Type 201 is extra strong as it is made in wider widths and with thicker material. This type of stainless-steel banding is used to fasten electrical pole line hardware and bundle large diameter cables. It too is used on large diameter hoses.

Type 316 Stainless Steel Banding

Type 316 is a chromium-nickel alloy with added molybdenum that is resistant to corrosion in seawater and other saline environments. It is the most widely used corrosion-resistant alloy in marine environments, and it is also used in the chemical industry and in food processing in a variety of applications. Uses include general fastening of fixtures and cables in marine vessels and bundling cables in refrigerated and saline corrosive environments.

Coated Type 316 Stainless Steel Banding

Like the type 316 stainless steel banding above, this product’s black polymer coated layer adds extra corrosion protection in marine and other hostile environments. It is used in subsea and in corrosive environments where there is vibration. The polymer coating on coated type 316 stainless steel banding protects against dissimilar-metal corrosion when banding different materials like steel and aluminum together.

Type 304 Stainless Steel Banding

Type 304 stainless steel banding is a good choice for lighter duty jobs like the fastening of insulation jackets to pipes or tanks. Generally, it is supplied in thinner gauges. It offers a combination of strength, flexibility and corrosion resistance. Another common use for type 304 is for general fastening of fixtures to objects that cannot be drilled.
